When most people think of the role of a pope, breaking records on social media sites, like Instagram, is usually not the first thought that comes to mind. However, Pope Francis not only takes selfies with the younger generations, but also has beaten them all at their own game: social media.
Despite not following anyone back, the pope currently has 3 million followers and 143 posts on his account, ranging from photos to videos, to photo collages from recent trips.
Within a mere 12 hours of starting his Instagram account, 'franciscus,â? Pope Francis had more than one million followers. This surpassed record-holder David Beckham, who had gained 1 million followers in 24 hours.
His first post was very characteristic of the pope and perhaps his most popular request...he posted a picture asking the world to pray for him in nine different languages.
His interest in Instagram sparked after he met with Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom. The two discussed the power of images and how they can be used to unite the world, despite different cultures and languages. Since that moment, the pope took to Instagram, using yet another way to connect with the younger generation today.
In addition to dabbling with Instagram, Pope Francis has nearly 10 million followers on his Twitter account, 'Pontifex,â? with 912 tweets.
Let's see what social media site will be next for the modern-day pontiff, perhaps snapchat?!
