Turkey has declared a 'state of emergency' for the next three months. This gives the government special powers to bypass parliament when creating new laws and the ability to limit or suspend various freedoms. With this measure they intend to fight those responsible for the failed coup.

The Vatican is concerned that the decision has made the world situation even more tense.

CARD. PIETRO PAROLIN
Secretario de Estado Vaticano
'These are not good developments. It is a source of concern for everybody because, of course, the tension in the world increases. And the tensions are not good conditions to take all the problems to solve it. This is a source of concern for everybody and we hope that the wisdom and humanity will prevail and will help people to look and to find the right solution.

It is a message with the same idea as the apostolic vicar of Anatolia, Paolo Bizzeti, who has asked to 'restore the calm needed to understand the causes of the malaise that provoked the coup.'

The blow perhaps has made the situation of the 3,000 Catholics in the country even more difficult. They are a fragile minority that are, in practice, relegated to second-class citizens.
