The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., received a special donation from Fiat Chrysler recently: the two black Fiat 500Ls that were used by Pope Francis during his apostolic visit to the US last September.

'What is most important to us is that we can use the cars to remind people of the great work that the Church does. That the best way that we can manifest the work of Christ is through the works of mercy and particularly in this year of mercy.

In order to promote Pope Francis' emphasis on helping others, one of the two Fiat's he used will be used to encourage public service among community engagement and ongoing acts of mercy of the Archdiocese of Washington and its Catholic Charities.

'Ultimately, our hope is that we are going to probably have an auction to raise some money to be able to donate to two institutions: to Catholic Charities of the Archdioceses of Washington. But also, to a newly named Pope Francis emergence department, at Providence Hospital. Both the hospital and Catholic charities serve some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

The #DriveWithFrancis initiative further fulfills a previous pledge titled, 'Walk with Francis as an opportunity to pray or to do some sort of volunteer activity or advocacy work on behalf of the most poor and vulnerable.

'What we want to do by being able to take the cars around town. Have them at the baseball stadium. Have them at parish summer picnics, have them at our high football games is to remind people that Pope Francis has really left us with this message of increasing our ability to care for those who are most vulnerable.

Annually, the Archdiocese of Washington, along with the Catholic Charities, gives aid to more than 120,000 people in need, regardless of their religion.
