In his fourth innovative video, the Pope calls for small farmers 'to receive just compensation for their invaluable work.â?
Pope Francis considers small farmers essential to the care for the earth and safeguarding it for future generations.
POPE FRANCIS
'This earth is a gift from God. It is not right to exploit it for the benefit of just a few, depriving the great majority of their rights and benefits.â?
According to a poll conducted in 2014 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there are more than 570 million farms in the world. More than 90 percent of these farms are run by an individual or a family. Small family farms occupy a large share of the worldâ??s agricultural land and produce about 80 percent of the worldâ??s food.
In this video, the Pope points out that our earth requires the necessary care that only small farmers can provide by cultivating it.
Earlier this year, the pontiff began the year addressing Catholics through a series of videos to request prayers for specific issues. In January, the prayer request was for interfaith dialogue and in February, for the care of nature. In March, for children to grow in healthy and safe environments.
The project is an initiative of Popeâ??s Worldwide Prayer Network and works in collaboration with La Machi Communications agency.
