For the first time in Italy, the work of James Tissot is exposed. As a genre painter of love and fashion, each of his paintings tells a story. Sometimes his stories speak of joy and nostalgia and always feature a women as the protagonist ... They are strong women with unflinching stares ... or women with halos of mystery ... Tissot was born in Nantes, France, but spent much of his life in London. Yet, it was his experiences living on both sides of the English Channel, both in Paris and London, that served as key influences in the painters life.

In the second half of his life, he placed a special emphasis on the Bible. He documented, in detail, full passages. Often, dressing his characters in clothes of his own era, as is the case in the return of the prodigal son.
