The Bolivian Cardinal Julio Terrazas has died in Santa Cruz de la Sierra after a lengthy illness. He was 79.

The cardinal was a longtime friend of Pope Francis, whom he studied philosophy and theology with at the Argentine city of Cordoba. When the Pope traveled to Bolivia last July, he took time to visit Terrazas in the hospital.

Before being created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001, he was bishop of Oruro and Archbishop of Santa Cruz.

With his death, there are 217 men left in the College of Cardinals. One hundred and seventeen of them are eligible to vote in an eventual conclave.
