It wasn't a typical ceremony inside St. Peter's Basilica, as workers chipped away the concrete that has covered the Holy Door since the Holy Year of 2000.
Following a short ceremony with prayer, the workers started on carefully dismantling the wall. They pulled bricks out and eventually removed a box that contains mementos from the last Jubilee Year.
The zinc box contained documents certifying the closing of the Holy Door, a parchment deed, some bricks, and a few commemorative medals from 2000.
But perhaps the most important items were the keys to open the Holy Door. Pope Francis will use them on December 8th during a ceremony that officially starts the Jubilee of Mercy.
