Earlier this year, when the Vatican announced that Msgr. Oscar Romero would be beatified, some of his associates came to Rome and delivered testimony about the Salvadoran bishop's life.

The humble Romero has now received another unique distinction: a small planet has been named after him. (Although it may actually be an asteroid, because it's exact the classification hasn't been determined.)
The Vatican Observatory was not involved in the naming, and only found out about it through media reports. It's unclear who changed the name.
The celestial body was previously known as '13703â? after it was discovered in 1998 by a Belgian astronomer in Chile. The name change was announced just last month. NASA confirmed it was named for the Salvadoran martyr.
Fortunately, there is no risk of the Romero asteroid striking planet Earth: It's located more than 300 million miles away.
