Fighting against environmental poverty through new government policies. This is the message Pope Francis reiterated as he met with Environment Ministers from the European Union.
The Pope called on them to put new policies in place that will help those in need.
POPE FRANCIS
'We know that those who are most vulnerable to environmental degradation are the poor; they are the ones who suffer its most serious consequences. Thus, solidarity means the implementation of effective tools that are able to fight environmental degradation and poverty at the same time.â?
In light of the coming UN Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Paris from November 30 to December 11th, the Pope highlighted the need to address the issue head on, not just with words, but with actions.
He also called on them to use new technology and new energy models, as a way to care for the environment collectively.
POPE FRANCIS
'We live, in fact, in a very interesting historical time: on the one hand science and technology give us unprecedented power; on the other, a proper use of this power requires that we adopt a more integral and inclusive vision.â?
The issue of justice and so called ecological debt between highly developed nations and third world countries, was also touched on. The Pope said countries must honor the debt they have, in cases where natural resources have been exploited for economical advantage.
