This is the only Ferrari Pope John Paul II was ever seen in. The image comes from the Pope's visit to the legendary Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy back in 1978. He later celebrated Mass at the Fiorano Circuit racetrack. Instead of traveling in the regular Popemobile that day, the Pope took a ride in one of the Ferraris that was waiting for him at the factory.
But that wasn't the Pope's only run-in with the world famous car company. In 2005, he was given an Enzo-model Ferrari as a gift. The story of that car began ten years ago and just recently came to a conclusion.
Only 400 Enzo-model Ferraris were ever manufactured, and the Pope received one of them. But he didn't use the car to get around Vatican City or to take joy rides at Castel Gandolfo. Instead, the pontiff asked that it be auctioned off and for all of the proceeds to benefit people who were recovering from the 2004 South Asian tsunami. The money was delivered to Pope Benedict XVI after Pope John Paul II's death.
An American collector paid almost one million dollars for the car then, and the full amount was donated to the victims. It's now been auctioned off again, this time in Mexico for six million dollars.
