Her name is Gema and she's six years old. She was born with cerebral palsy, which restricts her ability to communicate. Until now, understanding what she thought and felt was very difficult, but thanks to this new technology she's found a way to communicate...by moving her eyes. ;
A new invention allows her to control a computer's mouse. The software analyzes Gema's irises and configures the system so she can communicate. ;
The computer screen is divided into categories and she only has to move her eyes to select what she wants to say. The invention also uses a synthetic voice to create words. For example: how does Gema feel when she goes to the beach?
I feel happy.
For now, she can only point to simple ideas, but she is learning how to use the device so she can start reading, writing and eventually using the Internet.
This technology belongs to the Irisbond project, which researches systems of artificial sight that improve the quality of life for the disabled. Irisbond is also working on video games adapted for wide-ranging types of paralysis. ;
