In accordance with Pope Francis' wishes, the remains of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, commonly known as the Padre Pio, will be exhibited in St. Peter's Basilica for the first time. The veneration will last from February 5th to 11th, 2016, during the Holy Year of Mercy.
The information came from the Convent Sanctuary of Saint Pio's website. His body will be exhibited during Ash Wednesday, which is February 10th. The entire world will be invited to become 'missionaries of mercyâ? on that day.
Padre Pio had a reputation as a great confessor. He personally knew Pope John Paul II, years before he became Pope. The same pontiff canonized Pio years later during a crowded ceremony in Saint Peter's Square, on June 16, 2002.
Pope Francis announced the Jubilee Year of Mercy on his second anniversary as Pope, March 13th. The news came during a penitential ceremony in Saint Peter's Basilica. It will be a year of extraordinary importance for Catholics. The Pope said that the Church must 'rediscoverâ? the mercy of God during the special time.
