Joe Sinnott has had an enviable career: As an artist for Marvel, he drew some of the most iconic comic books of his time. But even with an already fulfilling workload, he still pursued work that was close to his heart.
Sinnott, a Catholic, penciled and inked a biography of Pope John XXIII as a passion project. The story was serialized and released in 1962. A complete version was never compiled.
Half a century later, a Kickstarter campaign has funded a complete, colorized re-issue of the comic book. ;
The biographical comic discusses Pope John XXIII's eventful life. It includes stories of him as a young boy growing up in poverty; his rise through the Vatican diplomatic corps; and his papal coronation. ;
The new version comes in hardcover and is 66 pages long. Its cover also commemorates the canonization of the pope, who became a saint on April 27, 2014. ;
