Led by the Holy See, a coalition of nations released a statement called 'Supporting the Human Rights of Christians and other Communities, particularly in the Middle East.â? It was submitted before the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The statement calls on countries throughout the world to 'support the deeply rooted historical presence of all ethnic and religious communities in the Middle East.â? It says that Christian communities are particularly at risk.
Religious communities face a 'serious existential threatâ? from ISIS, according to the statement. It continues to say that Christians are at risk of complete disappearance in the Middle East.
Silvano Tomasi, the Permanent Observer of Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva, said in a statement that the countries clearly wanted 'to move toward an elimination of these violations.â?
More than 50 nations signed on to the statement. They represented a diverse coalition: Somalia, Iraq, Cuba, the United States, and Australia were among the signees. They were led by the Russian Federation, Lebanon, and the Holy See.
