Cardinal Edward Egan, who was the Archbishop of New York from 2000 to 2009, died in Manhattan. The 82-year-old died of a heart attack on March 5th. ;
Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, Egan became a source of comfort for Americans. He drew praise for his spiritual leadership after the attacks.
Egan was perhaps the best known Catholic leader in America during his time as head of the Church in New York.
Born in Illinois in 1932, he studied at the North American College in Rome and the Pontifical Gregorian University.
Known for his soft-spoken demeanor, he was an expert in canon law and theology. Ordained as a priest in 1957, he became a bishop in 1985. ;
Egan was elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001. The College of Cardinals now has 224 members, and 125 are eligible to vote in a future Conclave.
