It's often true that when the worst of humanity manifests, so does the very best.

Large parts of Syria have been completely destroyed by the lengthy civil war. More than 210,000 people have died. Millions more became refugees as one of the most unique cultural centers in the world has been ruined.

Civilians have paid the biggest price in the four year conflict. But amid the darkness, a group of volunteers provides some hope. That group is the White Helmets, 2,200 citizens who help their community by doing things like this.

The White Helmets are regular people who had normal lives before the conflict began. The war ;changed everything for them. Instead of bearing arms, they volunteered to provide a more valuable service to the Syrian people.

Eighty of them have died in the crossfire while trying to help. Since they began working in 2013, they have saved more than 12,500 lives.

But to continue their mission, they need medical supplies and equipment. Without it, they won't be able to save more lives amid the rubble.

According to the World Health Organization, 45 percent of Syrian health workers have left the country. Between 400 and 600 of them have died since the war began. More than 40 hospitals have been destroyed.

The White Helmets is not a political organization. They care for the wounded regardless of which faction they belong to. Bombs, snipers and rusty barrels full of nails continue to destroy homes, schools and hospitals. And so they continue to risk their lives.
