It's a tragedy that's all too common. Migrants who crossed the Channel of Sicily in three boats like these died. The migrants were all between 15 and 25 years old. Many of them died from the cold, others drowned. Just 70 survived.
POPE FRANCIS
'I remain concerned about the news from Lampedusa, where there have been more deaths amongst the migrants caused by cold during their journey across the Mediterranean. I wish to assure my prayers for the victims and once again encourage solidarity so that no one left without necessary aid.â?
The migrants traveled in at least three small boats, which were adrift at sea. One deflated and sank with 100 people on board. Two people managed to hold on for 12 hours and were saved. In another boat, twenty-nine people died from the cold while trying to reach the coast.
In July 2013, Pope Francis traveled to Lampedusa and highlighted new ways to help these migrants.
