At the end of his weekly general audience, Pope Francis once more condemned the violence in Ukraine. He warned that the conflict has worsened and renewed his call for peace.
POPE FRANCIS
'Brothers and sisters, when I hear the words 'victory' or 'defeat' I feel great pain, a great sadness in my heart. These are not the right words. The only right word is peace.â?
The Pope went further, describing the war as fratricide and scandalous because it pits Christians against Christians.
POPE FRANCIS
'But think: this is a war between Christians. They both have the same baptism, yet they are fighting amongst themselves. Think about this scandal and pray, because prayer is our protest to God in time of war.'
Fighting in eastern Ukraine has intensified recently. On February 2nd the leader of the pro-Russian rebels in Donetsk announced a general mobilization of the army, which would increase the number of soldiers to 100,000.
