Pope Francis met with members of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota. Among other things, this Catholic tribunal decides when to issue a marriage annulment.

In his speech, Pope Francis explained the obstacles a man and a woman can face before getting married. He mentioned the influence of what he called spiritual mundanity.

POPE FRANCIS
'When one abandons a firm grasp of faith, it inevitably leads to false elements in a marriage, which in time, brings consequences in the validity of the consent given.

The Pope went on to say that a lack of faith can be a cause for marriage annulment. He praised the work of this group of judges, and asked to follow their mission without falling in the trap of technicalities and legalism.

To conclude, Pope Francis noted that many appeals undertaken by the Tribunal were done at no cost, when people could not pay for them. He added that he hoped for the day, when the entire process could be free of charge.
