January 3rd marks the 80th birthday of Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo. The Italian prelate is the former President of the Governatorate of Vatican City State. He also served as the President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican. Under John Paul II he was the Holy See's Foreign Minister. ;
At 80 years old, the Cardinal is still writing books. His most recent publication deals with women in the Bible and how their life can be applied to current day challenges. ;
Back in 2007, he was made a Cardinal by Benedict XVI. He took part in the Conclave that elected Pope Francis. ;
Once they turn 80, Cardinals lose the right to vote in a conclave. The current number of cardinal electors stands at 110. ;
