CARD. JORGE MARíA MEJíA
October 2009
'When John Paul II was going through his last days, I said: 'I want to see him before he dies.' So I visited him at Vatican. He was still lucid, but couldn't talk. He looked at me and nodded. I told him 'Your Holiness, it's me, Jorge.' 'Your Holiness, I would give up my life for you.' But instead he died... May he protect us all, from Heaven. And may we see him proclaimed a Saint.â?
He was the Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church from 1989 to 2003, when retired at the age of 80.
Two days after the election of Pope Francis he suffered a heart-attack and the new Pope went to visit him at the hospital.
Upon his death, Pope Francis sent a telegram to his brother. In the message, the Pope explained that they were lifelong friends.
