They began their meeting with this cordial greeting.

'Good morning, Mr. President
'Your Holiness
'Welcome
'It's a pleasure

The president of Peru, Ollanta Humala met with Pope Francis for a half hour at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

OLLANTA HUMALA
President of Peru
'I felt very good, I felt like I was at home, and treated very kindly. Yes, it's true that His Holiness is the Pope, but he has that Latin American warmth and it is very easy for Latin Americans to understand each other.

They spoke in private on climate change, the work of the Church in Peru and social inequality in Latin America. He also invited the Pope to visit the country.

After their meeting, the president presented his wife and members of his delegation to the Pope.

He also brought the Pope many gifts from Peru. Presenting a Peruvian soccer jersey, he asked for his prayers so that the national team could score some wins.

'It's been 22 years since we've been to a world championship.

Although the Pope was unable to wear the jersey, he did try out this white scarf.

'So that you can use it when it's cold and you can remember Peru.

Ollanta Humala's wife, Nadine Heredia, also gave him a cookbook.

'So that they can make you something to eat and you can eat delicious food.

They also gave him a book on 'El Señor de los Milagrosâ? (Our Lord of the Miracles) who Peruvians are devoted to, as well as an image of St. Martín de Porres, one of the patron saints of the country.

The Pope in turn gave them a copy of Evangelii Gaudium and a commemorative medallion of his pontificate.
