(VIDEO ONLY) During the General Audience, Pope Francis remembered the 30th anniversary of the peace treaty that was signed by Chile and Argentina on November 29, 1984 at the Vatican.
Both states were at the brink of war in 1978 due to the Beagle conflict, a territorial dispute. However, John Paul II offered to serve as a mediator in the conflict and after years of negotiations, the definitive borders of the two countries was agreed upon.

'I am happy to see this group of Chilean military personnel. In these days we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty between Argentina and Chile.
The borders are now clear. We are not going to continue fighting over the borders; we'll fight over other things, but not that.
But there is one thing that I would like to note: this was done thanks to the will for dialogue. Only the will of dialogue can solve problems. I would like to raise a thought of gratitude to St. John Paul II and to Cardinal Samoré who did so much to achieve peace between us. May all people who have conflicts of any kind, be it neighboring or cultural, can be encouraged to solve them at the table of dialogue and not in the cruelty of war.â?
