October 22 marks the feast of St. John Paul II, and for the first time, the Church celebrates it.
This same date marks the opening Mass of his pontificate. He presided over it six days before his election on October 16, 1978.

The Pontificate of John Paul II lasted 26 years. It was one the longest in history. His tomb is one of the most venerated by pilgrims who visit Rome.
Pope Francis canonized John Paul II and John XXIII on April 27, 2014. It was one of the most crowded ceremonies at St. Peter's Square.

But the feast of St. John Paul II is not the only celebration related to a Pope taking place in October. On October 11, the Church celebrated for the first time the feast of St. John XXIII. A week after, on October 19, Pope Francis beatified Paul VI.
