The Pope presided over the Opening Mass of the Synod on the Family in St. Peter's Basilica.

Pope Francis called on the bishops to work for the vineyard of the Lord and to cooperate in his plan of love during this time.

POPE FRANCIS
'Synod Assemblies are not meant to discuss beautiful and clever ideas, or to see who is more intelligentâ?¦ They are meant to better nuture and tend the Lordâ??s vineyard, to help realize his dream, his loving plan for his people. In this case the Lord is asking us to care for the family, which has been from the beginning an integral part of his loving plan for humanityâ?.

He also reflected on the risks 'of greed for money and powerâ? and the effect they have on 'evil pastorsâ?.

POPE FRANCIS
'We are all sinners and can also be tempted to 'take over' the vineyard, because of that greed which is always present in us human beings. Godâ??s dream always clashes with the hypocrisy of some of his servants. We can 'thwart' Godâ??s dream if we fail to let ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit.â?

The Synod on the Family will take place in the next two weeks and will end on October 19th with the beatification of its main promoter, Pope Paul VI.
