Violence continues to rage throughout the Middle East, with thousands of Christians and ethnic minorities killed or forced to flee their homes.

Charitable organizations have worked round the clock to provide refugees with food, shelter and clothing. They have also placed a spotlight on the plight of those suffering.

Now the European Parliament has recognized the efforts of the one of those organizations. The Catholic charity, Aid to the Church in Need, has been nominated for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

The nominees for the award include the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, Louis Raphaí«l Sako as well as Prof. Mahmoud Al-Asali, an Iraqi who was murdered in Mosul for defending the rights of Christians.

The annual Prize is awarded by the European Parliament to individuals and organizations who promote 'human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion or belief.
