It was 100 years ago that World War I began. Millions died, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in modern history. ;
To mark the occasion, Pope Francis announced he will visit Italy's Austro-Hungarian War Cemetery on Saturday, September 13th. ;It's there, that a ;total of 697 soldiers were laid to rest. There's also a monument to honor the fallen. ;
The Pope is planning on taking a one hour flight from Rome's Ciampino airport to the cemetery, located in Northern Italy. ;
He will walk into the cemetery by himself to pray and place flowers over the monument. He will then celebrate Mass at 10.00a.m, to pray for the fallen and the victims of war. ;
The Pope will give military superiors and also Bishops a light, that will be lit in their respective dioceses, as they too commemorate the fallen of World War I. Afterward the Pope will fly back to Rome at about noon. He is expected to arrive in the Vatican at about 1 o clock. ;
