There was anger, fear and confusion when it was confirmed that American journalist, James Foley had been beheaded by Islamic terrorists. ;

The brutality ISIS showed shocked everyone. ;Millions were taken aback by the violence-including Pope Francis. ;

On behalf of the Pope, the Vatican's Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, sent a letter of condolences which was read aloud during Foley's Catholic memorial Mass in Rochester, New Hampshire. In it, Parolin states that the Pope 'commends James to the loving mercy of God... and joins all who mourn him in praying for an end to the senseless violence.' ;

A few days before that, the Pope called Foley's parents, Diane and John, at their home. With the help of a translator, the Pope talked to them for 20 about minutes to personally offer his condolences. The couple said they were very moved by the fact that the Pope took the time to call them, since during that same time, he too was grieving over the car accident that killed three family members and left his nephew in critical condition. ;

Foley was a 40 year old American journalist who was kidnapped two years ago, as he reported on the civil war in Syria. ;
