American Cardinal Edmund Szoka has died. He passed away in Novi, Michigan, at Providence Park Hospital. ;
He was made a Cardinal by John Paul II in 1988 and was one of his closest confidants. He led the Prefecture of Economic Affairs of the Holy See from 1990 to 1997. ;
With his death, the number of cardinals drops to 210, but since he was over 80, Szoka had already lost a right to vote, so the number of cardinal electors remains the same, at 117. ;
