Music, dancing and plenty of enthusiasm were in full swing in the Vatican. This was much more than just a party. It's a way to welcome artists from the Mexican State of Hidalgo and above all else, to showcase their work.

Mexican folk art has always been known for its rich tapestry of colors and cultural significance. Now it has made its way to Rome as part of a new exhibition at the Vatican Museums.

IGNACIO LUGO RODRIGUEZ
Local Artist
'We are very happy to display a major part of what we do. We are representing the artists who create this art in our state. It is a work that is done with our bare hands, which we do with a lot of affection and with a lot of love.

A delegation made up of representatives and local artists from the Mexican state of Hidalgo made their way to the Vatican to kick off the exhibit.

FRANCISCO OLVERA RUIZ
Governor of the State of Hidalgo
'It has been a privilege for us in Hidalgo, and for the team to to be here in this special month. Especially here in the Vatican where nations and different cultures intersect, where we can make known what the state of Hidalgo has to offer in art and tourism.

Local Hidalgan artists displayed their wares which honor both the indigenous culture as well as their Catholic roots. Items ranged from handmade rosaries and embroideries to jewelry boxes and bronze plates bearing the Vatican coat of arms.

DORA PATRICIA CABALLERO
Local Artist
'It is truly wonderful that  the beauty of our art is appreciated in other countries, as well as their  personal and  decorative use.â?

So now, those who visit the Vatican Museums will also have a chance to see and even purchase from a list of 40 hand made items from this Mexican State. The artists say they're excited to have their work up for sale, but above all else, they're proud to represent their country and have their work showcased internationally.

The art pieces will be displayed at the Vatican Museum during the month of August. Organizers are hoping that if the exhibit is popular, it can eventually turn into a permanent exhibit.
