There was one day where German was the only language spoken in St. Peter's Square. Even Pope Francis put aside Italian and Spanish for a moment.
With 50,000 German altar servers representing the whole country at the meeting, it's a normal occurrence. This group, for example, came from south east Germany, near Stuttgart and Freiburg.
'It is a great experience, because we are about 50,000 thousand who are here at this place at the same time and who want to see our Papa.â?
Everyone lived the four day pilgrimage as a small party with the Pope. The was no shortage of music and dancing.
Another group, who hailed from Bavaria, wore traditional clothing that called everyone's attention.
'It's a traditional Bavarian dress, and yeah, we often wear it on holidays.â?
Although they may not know each other personally, the youth were united by one common ideal: to be proud in being altar servers.
'I think it brings you even closer to God and it's fun to help the people.â?
'To be in Church, and help others, and help our priests to do his job well, this is our job and this is what makes us happy.â?
The meeting with Pope Francis kicked off an unforgettable pilgrimage for them in the Eternal City.
