The pro-life European Citizen's Initiative titled 'One of Usâ? is headed to court to challenge the veto from the European Commission this past May. Proponents of the measure said the veto was anti-democratic.

The pro-life network of the same name collected nearly two million signatures throughout Europe. Their proposal would gives legal standing to human embryos, and cut taxpayer funding for embryonic stem cell research.

However, on May 28, the Commission vetoed initiative, meaning it would not send it for a vote at the European Parliament. The Commission argued the research was well regulated and provided potentially life-saving treatments.

One of Us dismissed their response as 'subjective. In filing a veto challenge at the General Court of the European Union, the group argues the Commission's reasoning is contradictory and violates the EU's democratic principles, because it denies the voice of millions of European voters.
