Italian Cardinal Francesco Marchisano passed away on Sunday, July 27, in Rome, at the age of 85.
He worked at the Roman Curia since 1956, especially within the Congregation for Catholic Education. In 2002, John Paul II named him Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Peter, president of the Factory of St. Peter, and Vicar General of the Vatican City State.
John Paul II also created him cardinal on October 21, 2003.

Pope Francis issued a telegram expressing his condolences and recalling his life dedicated to the Church and his fondness for art and culture.
With his death, the College of Cardinals decreases to 212 members. But since he was over 80, he was not eligible to vote in the 2013 conclave. The number of papal electors remains at 118.
