Pope meets with Sudanese woman who faced death penalty for being Christian

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis met with the Sudanese woman who faced the death penalty for being Christian. Upon her arrival, Meriam Ibrahim was welcomed by Italian authorities and eventually she met with Pope Francis.

'The Pope thanked them for being a living witness of their faith. The family thanked Pope for keeping them in mind, for his prayers and all the support they felt both from the Pope and from the Church. Through this meeting, the Pope showed his closeness and solidarity to all those who suffer limitations and persecution in the practice of their faith.â? 

Meriam who was pregnant at the time with her second child, was sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging in Sudan for converting from Islam to Christianity.  Her case made international headlines and provoked outrage. She was eventually released from prison and her death sentence was overturned.
