Father Alvaro Corcuera passed away in Mexico at the age of 57. He was the first person to succeed disgraced founder Marcial Maciel, to lead the Legionaries of Christ and Regnum Christi. As its leader, Corcuera experienced first hand the turmoil and scandal after Maciel's double life came to light.

In 2009, Rome Reports interviewed him in Rome, as the institution ordained 38 deacons. The Church celebrated the Year of the Priest, and Fr. Corcuera asked for prayers for them.

FR. ALVARO CORCUERA
'Us priests, we are not angels. We are men that also have our own daily struggles. We go through joys, suffering, and even our falls. But, we get up, needing lots of prayers.

Alvaro Corcuera was born in Mexico in 1957. He became a consecrated laymember of Regnum Christi in 1975. Four years later, he prepared to take his vows, and was ordained a priest in 1985. Twenty years later, he was elected as general director of the Legionaries of Christ and Regnum Christi.

An October 2012, Corcuera obtained a leave of absence from Card. Velasio de Paolis, the pontifical delegate to the Legionaries of Christ.

Just four months later, doctors diagnosed him with a malign brain tumor. Even as he fought against the cancer, Corcuera attended the institution's General Chapter that took place this past January in Rome.
