Presidents of Israel and Palestine meet with Pope Francis, before praying for peace

At roughly 18.10 pm, Rome time, Israel's President, Shimon Peres arrived to the ;Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, where he was welcomed by Pope Francis. They made their way to a residence hall and exchanged a few words before the cameras. They then held a private meeting for a few moments. ;

About 20 minutes later, at 18.28pm, the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, ;was welcomed by Pope Francis. Together they walked into the same residence hall before holding a brief meeting. ;

Both presidents then greeted one another, before the Pope, as they made their way to the Vatican Gardens, along with Ecumenical Patriarach, Bartholomew I. ;

Their arrival marks the beginning of a much anticipated meeting, where Jewish, Christian and Muslim prayers will be said, to pray for peace in the Holy Land. ;
