Italian Cardinal Francesco Monterisi turns 80 years old on Wednesday May 28: the number of cardinals eligible to vote in a conclave drops to 118.

Now Archpriest emeritus of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Cardinal Monterisi worked for years at the Vatican's diplomatic service.

After working in Egypt and South Korea, in 1993 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia and Herzegovina. During his time in charge, John Paul II made the historical visit to Sarajevo in 1997.

Benedict XVI created him cardinal in 2010 and he took part in the conclave that elected Pope Francis three years later.

Now, Cardinal Monterisi looses his right to vote in a future conclave. But the overall number of cardinals remains at 215.
