In an unexpected move, Pope Francis has not renewed German Cardinal Gerhard Mí¼ller, 69, as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The pope has appointed Mí¼ller's deputy, jesuit archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, as his successor.
After announcing the decision, Pope Francis thanked Cardinal Mí¼ller for his term. However, the Holy See hasnâ??t said if Cardinal Mí¼ller will hold any subsequent official position within the Vatican.
Until yesterday, Luis Ladaria, 73, was the second-in-command of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Previously, he was vice president of the Pontifical Gregorian University.
Benedict XVI named Gerhard Mí¼ller as prefect of this Vatican department in July 2012. Until then, he was bishop of Regensburg, Germany.
